TWO PROVEN SAUNA OPTIONSExplore our 2 standard designs. Designed for close-to-life settings and shared use
We offer two purpose-built sauna models - Pihka and Mettä - rooted in authentic Finnish sauna principles and designed for year-round use in Canadian climates.
These saunas are made for close-to-life settings: backyards and shared yards, cabins, neighbourhood installs, guest houses and hotels, and other human-scale environments where sauna is meant to be used often. Both models are designed around how sauna is meant to work, guided by a careful balance of craft and technical understanding. Interiors are optimized for good löyly, proper airflow, and comfort over long sessions, supported by a refined building envelope and timber construction approach that prioritizes consistency, durability, and long-term use - without sacrificing the feel of a traditional sauna. Our saunas are built in partnership with TMBR, in a controlled shop environment where details can be dialed in properly and quality is consistent from build to build. In many cases, this approach is more affordable and more predictable than building on site, even when saunas are shipped across the country. Below, you’ll find an overview of Pihka and Mettä, along with guidance on which model may be the best fit for your space and how you plan to use sauna. |

Need-to-Know Info:
What makes Mettä different than a barrel sauna?
Our Pihka + Mettä sauna models have been specifically designed to stand out for its superior performance, comfort, and durability.
Heat retention and performance are where bot the Pihka + Mettä sauna models really differs from the barrel design that is becoming popular in the North American market. Kam x TMBR saunas are designed based on traditional Finnish sauna principles wherein the square or rectangular design insulates better and distributes heat more evenly, providing a consistent and relaxing experience. Barrel saunas, while charming, often struggle with uneven heating due to their curved shape, causing heat to rise too quickly and trap in the upper area of the structure. There's a reason why there aren't many barrel saunas found in Finland.
When it comes to space and comfort, traditional saunas offer more headroom and flexible seating arrangements, allowing you to stretch out and truly unwind. Barrel saunas may feel cramped, which may limit your ability to enjoy longer sessions.
Durability is another key advantage. Both Pihka + Mettä are built with long-lasting sturdier construction and all-season insulation, standing up to harsh weather and precipitation. Barrel saunas are often more exposed to the elements and may wear down more quickly.
Lastly, traditional saunas offer opportunities for customization, from layout to materials, ensuring a space tailored to your preferences.

WHICH stove option should I choose?
It is completely your choice and we are happy to consult with you on the differences + benefits for your situation between electric and wood-fired sauna stoves.
We have selectively chosen beautiful, efficient + cost-effective Finnish electric and wood burning stoves as our preferred models and we offer these in our warehouse. We can also suggest other great options that may suit you, based on your preference.
A wood-fired sauna offers the full sauna experience from the wood-chopping to fire stoking to the calming ambience while in the sauna. If you are looking for the traditional sauna experience and you have access to a firewood supply, this can be the stove you are looking for. This is a great choice for rural areas + cabins where electrical hook-ups may not be feasible.
Electric stoves do have the advantage of heating up very quickly, are simple to operate and can be a great option if you’re looking to use your sauna on a frequent basis or live in a setting wherein a wood heater is not an option. Yes, electric sauna stoves are designed so that you can safely pour water on the stones.

What makes a finnish design OPTIMAL?
Finnish folks will likely tell you that the sauna is more than just a place to warm up—it’s a sacred tradition, deeply rooted in Finnish culture and lifestyle. A true Finnish sauna is designed with care and intention, ensuring it provides the perfect balance of heat, steam, and comfort.
The focus is on simplicity and quality. In keeping with tradition, we use natural, untreated wood for the interior, which feels warm and inviting and keeps the air pure. Proper ventilation is key, allowing the heat to be soft and even, not stifling. Proper ventilation is also key for health benefits and oxygen quality. The benches are thoughtfully placed so you can find your ideal temperature—whether you prefer the intense heat higher up or a gentler warmth below.
The löyly (steam from water thrown on the hot stones) is what makes a Finnish sauna special. It’s soft, enveloping, and therapeutic, unlike the dry heat you find in many other warm rooms or "saunas".
For us, the sauna is a place to relax, connect with nature, and cleanse both body and mind. A true Finnish sauna isn’t about luxury; it’s about authenticity, quality, and creating a space where you can slow down and just be. That’s what makes it unmatched. See our Journal Article here on what makes an authentic Finnish Sauna.

Do I require a building permit?
We have designed the Small and Medium Pihka dimensions as well as Mettä to comply with most municipal and regional guidelines without requiring a permit. Such a small building often does not require a building permit, however it depends on the municipality/city, so you should check with your local authorities. We can also help you with this process.
Should you select an electric sauna heater, a certified electrician will be required for the wiring and final hook-ups. We can support with this also.

What kind of site preparations do I need to make to my site?
A Mettä sauna needs a flat and solid surface. A sauna should be off the ground so the wooden parts do not come into contact with the moisture from the ground. There is no need for a separate foundation because the sauna is supported by its own fixed bases. In the case of a wood-burning stove, you may need a professional to certify the flue and chimney. You will need a certified electrician on site to connect the sauna to the mains. We are happy to support you with all of these details.
Do you build custom or commercial saunas?
Yes! We love to work with commercial clients to design and build both sauna + cold therapy spaces. Clients love our "real time" design capabilities, efficient costing analyses, and our expert sauna advice. Our team, led by the sauna expertise of Juho, can support with a space that is not only authentic and long-lasting, but also a solution that understands the demands of the North American sauna market + your ideal clients. Simply connect with us using the form below and we can get started on a design process.
Do you offer an infrared Version of the Mettä?
No, we do not. We only construct, and consult on, traditional Finnish Saunas. Our saunas are authentic Finnish saunas wherein water can be thrown onto the hot stones in the heater. The steam is an integral part of the sauna experience and a proven health benefit of the sauna.
